In these lectures we shall show how string field theory leads to an unambiguous procedure for evaluating these amplitudes. This procedure breaks down for amplitudes in the presence of D-instantons since open strings on the D-instanton do not carry any continuous momenta and therefore the divergences cannot be avoided by deforming the external momenta.
